New Summer Courses in International History

The Hertog Global Strategy Initiative of the Department of History is pleased to announce two brand new summer classes in international history: History S3990 and S3991 “Lectures in Global Strategy” is an innovate news class that combines seminar-style discussions with visits from prominent speakers and policymakers. Each week, students will attend a guest lecture by a prominent expert in the field and discuss a related reading assignment with a faculty member. The roster of guest speakers coming this year includes the deputy secretary of state, the Washington bureau chief for the New York Times, and the coordinator of threat reduction program for the Obama administration (for a complete schedule, see http://globalstrategy.columbia.edu/speaker-schedule/). The class meets on Thursday evenings, from 4:00-7:30 p.m.

We’re also offering a more historically oriented course on the Cold War in the nuclear era (History S4595), taught by one of the foremost scholars on the topic, Prof. Anders Stephanson of the Department of History. It meets on Mondays and Wednesdays during the first summer session, from 5:00-7:40 p.m.

Donate Your Calculators!

The service organization, the Double Discovery Center, needs calculators! Unfortunately, many deserving students in Harlem cannot afford to purchase an appropriate calculator to use for the SAT math problems. The students instead are figuring out the complex math in their head. This continues to place them at a severe disadvantage when they take the SAT exam; thus, limiting their future college options.

As a Columbia University student you can make a lasting impact on a kid’s life and college career simply by donating your calculator!

Calculator drop-off locations will be set up at Rm. 306 in Lerner. Or you can drop it off tomorrow (Friday) from 12PM-5PM at one of the boxes set up along Lerner Ramps.

Swimming Test Schedule – Attention CC SENIORS – TIME IS RUNNING OUT

Friday, May 7th is the LAST DAY to take your Swimming Test!!!

The number of seniors who still haven’t taken the swim test is quite high. We encourage all students to take the swim test, but seniors in particular, need to take the test as soon as possible.

The PE Dept. is only giving 5 more swimming tests.

The swimming test will be offered at the Uris Pool on the 5 remaining days and times listed below. College students who are unable to attend one of these sessions should contact Ken Torrey at 212-854-4001 to arrange a time to take the test. If you have any concerns regarding your ability to fulfill the swimming requirement, please contact Dr. Torrey as soon as possible.

ATTN SENIORS: COMMENCEMENT TICKET DISTRIBUTION (4/26-4/29)

University Commencement will take place on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. on Low Plaza. For more information regarding this event, please visit the Commencement Web site.

Tickets are required for guests and must be picked up in advance by each graduate. Each graduate may receive up to four tickets, which MUST be picked up at one of the scheduled times. Commencement tickets will not be available at any other time.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Bring your CUID. You may not receive your tickets without your CUID.
When you pick up your tickets, you will also complete a “name card” that will be used at the Class Day ceremony. On this card you will be asked to provide the phonetic spelling of your name. This will be used to assist those reading student names during Class Day.
If you have extenuating circumstances (i.e. you do not live here) you may send someone to pick up your tickets for you. They must present a completed proxy form, located here.
Your proxy must bring the form, along with his/her CUID to one of the designated Commencement ticket distribution locations to pick up your tickets.

CGI U 2010 Outstanding Commitment Awards

Apply now for the Clinton Global Initiative University’s 2010 Outstanding Commitment Awards, sponsored by WalMart. Winners will receive anywhere from $1,000 – $10,000 to support their Commitments to Action. The deadline for these awards is April 23, 2010. Click here to apply.

The CGI U Outstanding Commitment Awards launched in 2008 to provide financial support to innovative, student-driven initiatives. The awards recognize students and student organizations from a variety of higher education institutions and a variety of backgrounds.

Winners will receive funding to implement their CGI U commitments: new, specific, and measurable plans to make a difference in one or more of CGI U’s five global challenge areas. The challenge areas are: Education, Environment & Climate Change, Peace & Human Rights, Poverty Alleviation, and Public Health.

I am pleased to invite you to attend a dinner with Columbia College students from CC’12 and alumni from CC’87 and CC’62 on Wednesday, April 28^th, 2010 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. These dinners are an opportunity for students to share in conversation with alumni on topics related to Columbia College life on campus, both past and present.

Availability is limited, participants will be selected by a random lottery. Before you enter this lottery, please check your schedule to ensure that you would be able to attend this event on April 28 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

This symposium aims to present young, aspiring filmmakers (and students interested in film) with accurate advice about the challenges of breaking into the film industry. By illuminating the resources filmmakers gain through partnership with media organizations like Tribeca, young filmmakers will understand the opportunities that become available through making connections with these organizations. We aim to celebrate the diverse experience of filmmakers that have come through Tribeca by providing a panel of different filmmakers and professionals that have either participated in Tribeca programs or currently work at Tribeca. A conversation around the various careers that have been supported by Tribeca will show the unique perspective of how to get your movie made and navigate the business of making movies.
